Year 1

Early Phase of Learning

Our focus in Year One is that all aspects of children’s development are equally important and interwoven. Every child is an individual developing at his or her own rate.

Dimensions Of Learning

Dimensions of Learning is our whole school approach to how we plan and teach. DOL’s premise is that five types of thinking, called the five dimensions of learning are essential to successful learning. The five Dimensions of Learning are:

  1. Attitudes and Perceptions
  2. Acquiring and integrating knowledge
  3. Extending and refining knowledge
  4. Using knowledge meaningfully
  5. Productive Habits of Mind

Major Themes

Me, My family, Easter, Living things and Farms, Fairytales, Bears, Dinosaurs and Christmas

Excursions and Activities

Term1 – Sensitivity Unit, Easter Hat Parade and Grandparents’ Assembly
Term 2 – Trevena Glen Farm
Term 3 – Teddy Bears’ Picnic
Term 4 – Arbor Day

All content taught in the Key Learning Areas follow the Education Queensland Outcomes Based Syllabi.

English

Year 1 focuses on Phonological awareness, Reading, Writing (Handwriting and Core Genre) and Oral language development.

Maths

  Maths is taught in whole class, small group and individual situations, using the Go Maths programme.
There is a major focus on mathematical language through hands on activities.

SOSE 

Studies of Society and Environment is taught through the following strands:

  1. Time, Continuity and Change
  2. Place and Space
  3. Culture and Identity
  4. Systems, Resources and Power

 

 

Science

Science is taught through the following strands:

  1. Natural and Processed Materials
  2. Life and Living
  3. Science and Society
  4. Energy and Change
  5. Earth and Beyond

ICT

Each classroom has 4 computers. The children visit the computer lab each week, where they work with their teacher and older buddy children to complete set tasks. Year one children use Kidpix, Word, Power Point and Publisher programs. ICTs are integrated into all subject areas. Digital cameras, data projectors and laptops are available for classroom use.

Technology

Students generate design ideas and communicate these through experimentation, exploratory play and pictures.

Arts

The Arts is taught through the following strands:

  1. Dance
  2. Drama
  3. Media
  4. Music
  5. Visual Arts

As well as this each class presents a P-3 Assembly twice per school year.

Specialists
                 
Year One children attend 2 music lessons and 2 swimming/ sports lessons per week. Religious Education is also offered.

Buddies

Each year one class has an upper school buddy class. The buddies meet regularly to play games, use computers, play sport, complete art activities and read stories.

Assessment

Parents are provided with two written reports per year and also have an opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher twice per year.
