Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

At Ascot State School we believe the early years of learning are the crucial foundation upon which later education experiences are built.  Year 2 offers a child centred curriculum by providing meaningful, age-appropriate learning experiences.  Emphasis is placed on the consolidation of the “curriculum basics” of numeracy and literacy, which is developed throughout the science and SOSE programmes.  We concentrate on fostering opportunities to extend creative processes through drama, art, music and dance and technology.

This philosophical stance is implemented through the Dimensions of Learning framework. Children are explicitly taught how to

  • organise their own learning,
  • make decisions,
  • solve problems
  • work co-operatively

We assist children to construct their knowledge through inquiry- based learning using life-like and real-life experiences.  Children participate in a range of integrated units

  • Space
  • Machines
  • Me and My History
  • The Sea
  • Waterwise
  • Insects

Within these units higher order thinking skills (HOT skills programme) and the use of the school’s modern information communication technology are integral to our goal of the development of life long learners.

All classes enjoy

  • weekly visits to the school’s modern library
  • a choice of two computer labs with up to date technology
  • two lessons each week in music and physical education
  • the opportunity to become involved in Junior Choir

Our school values respect, offering a safe, secure environment where physical needs are met and children feel psychologically safe and secure.  Positive partnerships between children, teachers, school personnel and parents are fostered. The school welcomes new parents through our Parent Liaison scheme and encourages their involvement with

  • morning reading
  • group work-maths, art lessons
  • swimming lessons
  • Weekly assemblies
  • Excursions to the Museum, Science Centre, Workshop Railway Museum and Underwater World
  • Science Club
  • Visiting Scientist Program

Formal reporting and interviews are provided each semester but parents are welcome any time to discuss a child’s progress.
